Arts of the Albemarle (AoA) plays host to more residents of northeastern North Carolina than any other regional organization. At the center of every program, performance, and exhibit are our volunteers. AoA volunteers play a critical role, offering their creativity, experience and time to our organization and the five counties we serve. Virtually every aspect of our organization needs the assistance of volunteers—this includes our visual and performing arts, special events and day-to-day operations. No matter your age, availability, or background, we have a job for you!

FUN: An average day at AoA consists of beautiful art, creative people, and constant activity. As an AoA volunteer, you will be surrounded by other community members who share your passion for the arts, as well as a team of staff members who are dedicated and enthusiastic about their jobs. We have fun at AoA and feel a happy work environment is the key to a thriving organization.
FLEXIBILITY: Most volunteer positions at AoA may be adjusted to fit your schedule. In instances where volunteer help is needed for a specific time or day, a call for assistance will be made, giving you the opportunity to offer your help if you’re available.
FREE STUFF: Passionate about the arts, but limited by a tight budget? Volunteering at AoA is the perfect way to experience shows, attend events, and take classes FREE of charge! All theater and event volunteers get to enjoy the show or event in which they are volunteering free of charge. Volunteers are encouraged to take classes (free of charge) in order to further their education in the area in which they volunteer. In addition, artist volunteers receive an additional perk for their service—AoA’s commission rate reduces by 10%, from 35% to 25%, for artists who volunteer a minimum of four hours a month.
How do I volunteer:
1. REVIEW OUR VOLUNTEER TEAMS: Review the volunteer team descriptions below and decide which group(s) you’d like to be a part of based on your skills, personality and availability.
2. SUBMIT AN APPLICATION: Just fill our online volunteer registration form, or download our volunteer application and drop it off at AoA: 516 E. Main St., Downtown Elizabeth City, email it to firstname.lastname@example.org or fax to 252.338.3156.
3. MEET WITH OUR VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR: After receiving and reviewing your application, our Volunteer Coordinator will schedule a time to meet with you. You’ll learn more about your volunteer role, review our Volunteer Policies and Procedures, and discuss any questions or concerns you may have.
THE GALLERY TEAM assists AoA’s Gallery Manager and Facilities Manager in the monthly and quarterly preparation of the gallery. Responsibilities include assisting with the layout and rehanging of artwork, arranging 3-dimensional artwork, wholesale items and jewelry, and creating window displays that beautifully represent current exhibits and programs happening at AoA.
Immediate Supervisor: Gallery Manager
Frequency: The Jenkins Gallery and AoA’s Board Room showcase Featured Artists on a monthly basis. The remainder of the gallery changes on a quarterly basis. Because of this, members of the Gallery Team are needed monthly to rehang the Jenkins Gallery and Board Room and rearrange shelving, with more volunteers needed quarterly to assist with the full gallery rehang. Volunteers are needed the last week of each month either during or after regular business hours.
Qualifications: An eye for design or decor including color-combining, effective layout and creative display techniques. Physical ability to handle artwork and arrange items in shelving and cabinets.
Benefits of serving on the Gallery Team: This is a creative role in which volunteers will be directly involved in the design of the AoA galleries. Using an eye for design and layout, volunteers will work with each individual piece of art, determining the best way to showcase and feature the piece. This is an infrequent job which is needed once a month. Volunteers may work independently or in teams, depending on their preference.
THE GREETERS/FRONT DESK TEAM serves as a welcoming and friendly face to visitors of AoA. Responsibilities include greeting visitors as they enter AoA and assisting them with their visit, answering phones, sharing information with visitors including upcoming classes and events, and assisting with other administrative tasks, such as mailings, when needed.
Immediate Supervisor: Volunteer Coordinator
Frequency: Greeters are needed every day that AoA is open: Monday – Saturday, 10am – 5pm. Most greeters work half-day shifts.
Qualifications: An outgoing, warm personality who is comfortable speaking to strangers. A willingness to help shoppers, artists and visitors, being proactive in anticipating their needs. The ability to follow instructions and procedures related to class registration, artwork drop-off and other administrative tasks associated with the front desk.
Benefits of serving on the Greeter/Front Desk Team: This is a social role in which volunteers will visit with AoA’s patrons, assisting them with purchases, ticket sales or general information. This is a wonderful role for the individual who enjoys meeting new people.
THE FACILITIES TEAM helps take care of our beautiful building by assisting the Facilities Manager in the cleaning and care of the facility. Responsibilities include but are not limited to cleaning of galleries, assisting the Facilities Manager with general repairs such as painting and patching of gallery walls, attaching name plaques to theater seats, and cleaning the stage area between productions. This team also assists the Facilities Manager in the setup or removal of riser seating in Maguire Theatre.
