Artists of all ages, mediums, and skill levels are invite to work independently in a group setting in AOA’s weekly Open Studio. Make friends, spark new collaborations, and more. Tables are provided, simply bring your supplies and get to work!

Named in honor of a founding mother of AOA's predecessor, the Pasquotank Arts Council, the Mary Crutchfield Landmark Competition & Exhibition invites regional artists working in two-dimensional mediums to submit artworks depicting local landmarks of their choice.

During the opening reception at the September First Friday Art Walk, the exhibition will see five pieces selected for various awards.

Join us every fourth Friday for a night of social dancing extravaganza, brought to you by Chuck Wills in partnership with Arts of the Albemarle. Whether you're a seasoned pro or taking your first steps onto the dance floor, everyone is welcome!

Experience the joy of movement with a free dance class from 7:00-8:00 PM, perfect for beginners looking to learn the basics. Then, let loose and show off your moves during the open dance floor, from 8-8:30.

“The past is never dead. It’s not even past,” wrote William Faulkner in 1951. Moving to North Carolina sent Lynne and Suzanne on personal quests to understand what the state’s histories meant for them—for Suzanne, descended from early white settlers and growing up in Raleigh, and for Lynne, the daughter of Italian immigrants and growing up in New York. Not Even Past is an artistic reckoning with what they found.

The Manteo Murphys host an unforgettable evening for audiences of all ages, blending classic hits, original music, blues, Americana, and country rock.

Splash is an annual week-long arts event held in Elizabeth City and hosted by Arts of the Albemarle. While Splash originated as a gathering of artists, today it has evolved into a week of community creativity and fun that engages local and visiting artists with learning opportunities and an inspiring environment, and creates a symbiotic ecosystem between artist and community full of new ideas and experiences.

Community meets creativity at this streetside art fair, where artists and artisans are invited to sell their work and engage with the public. In addition booths selling art and handcrafted items, there will be free music, family activities, and crafts, stretching down the street and into the Madrin Studio, where Splash artists have been hard at work all week long.

Enjoy an evening of contemporary dance in the Maguire Theater, performed by the Big Red Dance Project (BRDP) and a select few community members, who will be joining them on stage after participating in a two-day workshop. 

BRDP is a modern dance company with dancers ranging in age from 35–73 and beyond, the group focuses on rediscovering dance at an older age.

The group explores questions like: How do we, as mature adults, find the ability to sustain a dancing life? How do we honor the spirit of our dancing selves while acknowledging the limitations that come with aging?

Photographer Bryce Lankard captures images from a goal of documenting life’s many emotional reactions that come with being human.

In Drawn to Water, viewers will find bodies of water—both literal and suggested through context—as a common thread connecting the series of black and white images, which form a thoughtful narrative on water’s significance in our lives, memories, and identities.
